What Power Steering Fluid Is

Power steering is a feature that has become essential in modern cars; it is what allows drivers to easily turn the wheels of vehicles that weigh thousands of pounds. Not originally equipped on cars during the early twentieth century, power steering has adapted over the years and helped make driving much simpler. There are electric power steering systems and hydraulic power steering systems, with the former being one of the latest additions to modern vehicles.

Hydraulic power steering systems utilize pump and belt combinations to provide steering assist. Hydraulic power steering pumps are filled with power steering fluid. Over time, this power steering fluid, like many of the car’s fluids, begins to break down and become dirtier. As the power steering fluid ages, a driver may notice that the power steering pump makes noises or that steering the vehicle has become more difficult. If you notice these signs on your own vehicle, then it is time for you to change your power steering fluid.

Changing Power Steering Fluid

Depending on how heavy your vehicle is, you may not have to change your power steering fluid immediately; many old cars don't even have power steering. However, it will be far more difficult for you to drive your car. You will have to adjust to using a larger amount of force to turn your steering wheel and point the vehicle where you would like to go. Additionally, you will find that it is much harder for you to steer your vehicle at slower speeds and that it can be almost impossible to steer while you are at a standstill.

Flushing and Replacing Your Power Steering Fluid

Changing your power steering fluid isn't a challenging task. You will need to read the owner's manual of your vehicle to determine which fluid your model needs. After you have gotten the proper power steering fluid, you will need to raise your vehicle and drain the old fluid out of the system. As you drain the old fluid, make sure to completely turn the steering wheel in the left and right directions. Once the old fluid is drained and you have sealed the system, place the new fluid into the pump and rotate the steering wheel in both directions fully again.
